Teaching Methodology at Doce Lunas Spanish

At Doce Lunas Spanish, my teaching philosophy is rooted in connection, personalization, and real-world communication. Having lived in multiple countries, traveled extensively throughout Europe, Central America, and South America, and taught hundreds of Spanish students from diverse backgrounds, I bring a truly global perspective to my one-on-one online Spanish lessons.

What I love most about private Spanish tutoring is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with my students. This close, individualized approach allows me to understand each learner’s goals, interests, motivations, and learning style. As a result, I’m able to create customized Spanish instruction that meets each student exactly where they are and helps them progress with confidence.

How Online Spanish Lessons Work

All lessons are conducted via Google Meet, where I share my screen and work from a dedicated Google Doc created for each student. During every class, I take detailed notes on:

  • New Spanish vocabulary

  • Grammar concepts

  • Pronunciation and accent development

  • Cultural insights from the Spanish-speaking world

This shared document also houses homework assignments, uploaded resources, and relevant links, giving students 24/7 access to their learning materials between classes. This system supports continuity, accountability, and long-term language retention.

My Four Teaching Pillars

My Spanish immersion methodology is built on four complementary pillars that work together to develop fluency efficiently and naturally:

  1. Storytelling with TPRS® (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling)

  2. Grammar Foundations with VHL (Vistas Higher Learning)

  3. Vocabulary Development with Quizlet

  4. Personally Relevant Real-World Resources

1. TPRS®: Learning Spanish Through Storytelling

TPRS® is a powerful language-acquisition method that uses stories to teach the most high-frequency Spanish vocabulary and structures. Students are exposed to complex language early (without heavy grammar explanations) and acquire it through repetition, memorization, and retelling.

This approach allows learners to begin communicating about their own lives quickly and naturally. Once students can confidently use the language they’ve acquired, we transition into structured grammar study.

2. VHL (Vistas Higher Learning): Structured Grammar & Cultural Context

Vistas Higher Learning is a college-level online Spanish textbook widely used in universities. Each chapter focuses on:

  • A specific Spanish-speaking country

  • One thematic vocabulary set

  • 3-4 targeted grammar concepts

  • A “fotonovela” (educational telenovela) that reinforces learning

Students receive clear, personalized grammar notes in their Google Docs and corresponding vocabulary study sets in Quizlet to reinforce each chapter.

3. Quizlet: Smart, Portable Vocabulary Study

Every student has their own Quizlet class, where I assign vocabulary sets aligned with our lessons. Students are also encouraged to create custom sets based on the Spanish they need most in daily life.

I recommend downloading the Quizlet app for on-the-go practice and share proven strategies I’ve used for over 15 years to help students maximize vocabulary acquisition efficiently.

4. Real-World Resources: Spanish for Your Life and Career

I’ve taught Spanish to farmers, gardeners, vineyard managers, event supervisors, lawyers, firefighters, teachers, and more. No two students have the same reasons for learning Spanish—and that’s what makes personalized instruction so powerful.

Together, we:

  • Build customized Spanish glossaries

  • Practice grammar through relevant role-play scenarios

  • Create engaging writing assignments, such as journals, professional simulations, or summaries of Spanish books and TV series

This collaborative, student-centered approach turns each lesson into a process of co-creation, resulting in a learning plan that is practical, motivating, and deeply aligned with each student’s real-world needs.

Spanish Lesson Schedule

At Doce Lunas Spanish, all online Spanish lessons are thoughtfully scheduled to support consistency, momentum, and long-term fluency.

Beginning Spanish students meet twice per week for two 75-minute private Spanish lessons on the same days each week. This consistent schedule helps establish a strong rhythm and flow, which is essential for building confidence and foundational language skills.

Intermediate and advanced Spanish students may choose one 75-minute private Spanish lesson per week. This option is ideal for learners who want to maintain their current level, refine accuracy, or continue making steady progress toward fluency.

The purchase of your first Spanish lesson package requires an initial consultation. This session ensures that Doce Lunas Spanish is the right fit for your learning style and that the selected package aligns with your current Spanish level and personal goals.
